Local Mobilization & Cities of Service
Repair the World believes that Judaism requires us to work towards improving the world, both within and outside the Jewish community, and indeed offers tangible insights and tools for bringing about positive social change. Jewish individuals have a range of experience and expertise in service-related work; still more possess skills that can be effectively utilized in service capacities. Yet social action efforts by members of Jewish communities are frequently done in isolation, and the skills of disengaged Jews are often not tapped when they could be valuable to service-based initiatives.
We seek to facilitate the development of Jewish community service-ecosystems that are mobilized by our tradition around the ideas of social action and justice. We envision networked “cities of service”, in which Jewish individuals and institutions work together, across denominational and organizational lines, toward a common vision of tikkun olam.
Educating Jewish youth, teachers, professionals and community members toward such practices is both practical and critical to this effort. To that end, it is incumbent upon local Jewish institutions to infuse the values of chesek, tzedek and tikkun olam into all aspects of their work. The Partnerships department works with Jewish communities to organize programming that explores the historical, philosophical and theoretical frameworks behind the aforementioned ideas, and facilitates discussion on how to incorporate such values/action into the fabric of Jewish education, professional work and daily life.
