Back to School Service: Make Sure Every Student Heads to Class Fully Equipped

Believe it or not, the school year is here! It’s time to sharpen those pencils (and by that I mean dust off those laptops), decorate your locker, and get back into the swing of the 3 R’s – and no, I’m not referring to reduce, reuse, recycle! But in between the crush of classes, homework, and after school clubs, going back to school is also the perfect time for service.
With more than 20% of American’s kids living in poverty, nearly 16 million students do not have the resources they need to start the school year with notebooks, backpacks, pens, calculators and other basic school supplies. This year, help all kids head back to school on the right foot. Here are a few ways to get involved and make a difference:
- Staples for Students: DoSomething and Staples are teaming up for the 5th straight year for their “Staples for Students” drive. Now through September 15, you can donate school supplies at your local Staples store to support disadvantaged students. Even better: plan a supply drive at your school and magnify your impact!
- UJA-Federation: UJA offers tons of opportunities for back to school service in the New York area – tutoring after school, helping special needs students, school supplies drives, and more.
- Veahavta: This Toronto-based Jewish humanitarian organization is packing “Kinder Kits” that include a backpack, pens, erasers, crayons, rulers and other important supplies for students in Canada and around the world.
