Happy Monday! We hope you had a meaningful high holiday season, from Rosh Hashanah all the way through Simchat Torah. To get you back in the swing of non-holiday scheduling, here’s your weekly collection of inspiring and thought-provoking bits from around the web.

  • An interview in Huffington Post with Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Director of Miss Representation, a film on how the media’s misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence and which features Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Condoleezza Rice, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem among others.
  • In GOOD, Two City Year corps members share their experiences working as tutors and mentors in schools in hopes of closing the achievement gap and ending the dropout crisis.
  • On the Protests! The New York Times published an article about the flashes of anti-semitic sentiment, and the much more prevalent Jewish holiday celebrations found at the Occupy Wall Street protests while The Forward published an profile about a former Israeli settler-turned peace activist who is spending time and raising awareness at Occupy Wall Street. Relatedly, Repair the World grantee-partner Avodah published a video on their blog created by alum Rosa Gaia Saudners that shares a sample of voices from Occupy Chicago.
  • The Huffington Post published an article about the One World Youth Project, an international organization educating and empowering students to become engaged global citizens.
  • On a brighter note, the New York Times  published a fascinating and hopeful profile about Ed Toth, New York’s modern-day Johnny Appleseed.
