Repair the World is a national nonprofit dedicated to inspiring American Jews and their communities to give their time and effort to serve those in need. Across the country, we engage the Jewish community, and young adults in particular, in a range of volunteer opportunities and issue-based campaigns that connect them to volunteering alongside their neighbors to strengthen their communities.


Repair the World is seeking a Director of Finance, a detail-oriented self-starter to lead the Finance team. This candidate will help to ensure that the organization’s financial controls, reporting and systems are efficient so as to increase its capacity to meet its programmatic goals. This person would be required to manage the finance personnel (staff of 3-5) and perform all duties surrounding managing a staff. This position is full-time, available immediately, based in New York City, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.


Financial reporting, budget formulation and development reporting

  • Monthly financial statements with variance report are completed for the executive team and staff
  • Quarterly financial statements with dashboards are completed for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Annual financial statements, and working papers are completed before annual audit
  • Satisfactory letters are received from the auditors (such letter to be mailed directly to treasurer with copy to chief executive officer and director, finance & administration)
  • Annual 990 is filed on a timely basis
  • Annual budget is completed before October board meeting or date specified
  • Systems, practices and timelines are well documented
  • Funder reports are prepared and sent to funder on a timely basis

Accounting, administrative staff and volunteer management

  • Staff and volunteers are properly instructed, trained, and informed of any related policies, procedures, and required remedies that are necessary to meet the requirements
  • Staff and volunteers are trained in, and act in a manner suitable to strong customer service component

Payroll administration

  • Deadlines for payments and deadlines are met

Finance and Investment and Audit and Risk Management Committee’s liaison

  • Leadership is provided to the committees in addressing important financial issues
  • Information is provided in a timely manner
  • Meetings are productive and members are satisfied with their participation in the committee
  • Fulfill the committee’s recommendations in a consistent, timely manner

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or related field required, MBA or CPA preferred but not required
  • Five or more years supervisory/controllership accounting experience required, non-profit preferred
  • Knowledge of grants and grants administration systems and budget processes required
  • Knowledge of Quickbooks/Intacct Accounting software, or other accounting software
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word • Demonstrated knowledge of financial reporting
  • Superior attention to detail, with excellent analytical skills
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate staff workload(s) to meet competing deadlines
