Repair the World is dedicated to making deep and meaningful volunteer service a central part of Jewish life. We enable people to transform their neighborhoods, cities and lives through service experiences rooted in Jewish values, history and heritage.

Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York City. In most communities, an Executive Director supports a cohort of Fellows (ages 21-26) who make a yearlong service commitment to serving with Repair the World. During this year, Repair’s Fellows work closely with three audiences: they use peer-to-peer outreach and recruitment to engage thousands of other young adults in volunteering and learning, they support local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and education opportunities for those participants, and they partner with local Jewish organizations with experience or aspirations in driving meaningful service and in supporting young Jewish adults where they are in their Jewishness and in their social impact aspirations.Repair the WorldDetroit’s fourth cohort of Fellows and Repair’s Teen Engagement Associate are building a young Jewish community in Detroit that coalesces around substantive service through a Jewish lens and spurs deep impact on issues of social justice in the community. In addition to young adult programming, Repair the World Detroit oversees PeerCorps, which activates Jewish teens to engage b’nai mitzvah students in volunteering, and partners with a diverse group of secular, faith-based and interfaith partners.

Role

The Executive Director of Repair the World Detroit will oversee the implementation and growth of this successful and dynamic site. This leader will be passionate about the intersection of Judaism and service, and deeply committed to maintaining and building community collaborations and fostering an environment of empowerment.

The Executive Director will supervise two staff –a Teen Engagement Associate and part-time Workshop Coordinator–and a cohort of 5-6 Repair the World Fellows, beginning in August 2017.

This position reports to Repair’s Senior Program Director, based in New York City.

Responsibilities

Supervision and Training

•Supervise a high-performing Teen Engagement Associate and part-time Workshop Coordinator.

•Support recruitment and selection and orient as well as coach, train and supervise a cohort of 5-6Repair the World Fellows.

•Local Programming: Service Portfolio and Community Partnerships

•Work closely with Programmatic Team on the following:

•Developing and managing deep partnerships with Jewish, civic, and service-providing organizations.

•Planning service opportunities that both meet the needs of the service partner and the target audience

•Planning a robust calendar of programming.

•Deepening volunteers’ understanding about the social,economic and historical context of their service as well as the connections to Jewish values.

•Guide the development, testing and refining of local engagement strategies to recruit, attract, and retain community-based young adult volunteers.

•Oversee and grow PeerCorps and other niche programming that tailors Repair’s model for particular audiences, like teens, college students, and young families.

•Gather, analyze, and learn from data on and experiences with participants, programs, and partners.

•Annually set and regularly refine targets and productivity measures for the program, staff and Fellows based on articulated assumptions and hypotheses and prioritize continual learning and improvement.

•Manage local budget, facilities, resources, vendors and educators.

National Program Building

•Work in close collaboration with a team of Directors and national staff.

•Learn from and implement best practices from other Repair the World Communities.

•Oversee setting targets and the tracking and measurement of local milestones and progress.

•Build awareness and enthusiasm for Repair the World as well as Repair the World Detroit

•Manage relationships with local affiliates of Repair the World’s national partners.

•Create bi-monthly reports for national staff that will inform and support Repair theWorld’s national strategy, review the bi-monthly reports of other Communities as well as national reports and engage with the national staff on national strategy.

Stakeholder Engagement

•Effectively communicate the organization’s mission and goals to a wide variety of audiences and serve as a spokesperson.

•Develop, engage and manage a local advisory committee.

•Work with Repair’s national staff to engage local funders, ensuring Repair the World Detroit’s long-term sustainability.Requirements

•Exceptional oral and written communication skills.

•Excellent facilitation of meetings, trainings, and group-based reflection.

•Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple high-level projects at once.

•Comfort working both independently and collaboratively.

•Infectious excitement about connecting Jewish values and learning to service and social change work.

•Strong enthusiasm and energy, and ability to thrive in high-pressure environments.

Required Experience

•Direct volunteer management.

•Leading and developing service projects.

•At least six years of management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.

•Management of three or more professionals simultaneously.

•External stakeholder relationship management at an executive-level or equivalent.

Preferred Experience

•Leading large-scale trainings.

•National Service (i.e. City Year, TFA, AmeriCorps).

•Facilitating Jewish service-learning.

•Working with communities in Detroit

•Budget management and fundraising

•Understanding and positive perspective toward data management.

•Ability to travel up to six times per year, generally to otherRepair the World Communities or to nearby retreat locations.

•Ability to work during evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
