Position Overview

Repair the World is seeking an experienced accountant, skilled financial analyst and strong communicator to join the team as our next Controller. The Controller manages accounts payable/receivable, budgets, audits/tax returns, payroll, and reporting/filing. The Controller will assist the Senior Director of Finance (SDF) in developing, implementing, and overseeing all financial and accounting systems, controls, policies, and practices to ensure compliance with organizational policies, GAAP, and applicable laws and regulations.

The Controller will work closely with department heads and staff to educate them on finance and accounting procedures and to learn how the finance team can support operational efficiency and our continued growth. This is a full-time position located in New York City in order to be proximal to other finance team members. This position will report directly to the Senior Director of Finance.

Position Responsibilities

Accounting Leadership 

  • Manage the Accountant to ensure completion of their work, including timely internal and external reporting, and security of financial data.
  • Perform a timely and consistent month-end close process including preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee all program and grants accounting and collaborate with the Program and Development teams to ensure that the expenditures are aligned with grant and program budgets.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations and analysis, including but not limited to:
    • Balance Sheet Account Reconciliations 
    • General Ledger Analysis
    • Grant and revenue management
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner, accounts receivable is collected promptly, and debt and lease payments are made in accordance with agreements.

Financial Operations 

  • Responsible for accurately and timely recording of payroll entries
  • Establish financial procedures and proactively implement changes to gain efficiencies.
  • Set, communicate and enforce internal control procedures.

 Reporting

  • Supervise the process of monthly reporting to the budget managers. 
  • Analyze financial data and present monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports in an accurate and timely manner to the SDF, COO or the CEO, as appropriate. 
  • Maintain reporting calendar and ensure that reporting deadlines are reviewed and met by the accounting team.

Audit Management and Compliance

  • Lead the planning and coordination of the annual audit and tax return preparation with the independent CPA firm and ensure completion of the audit in a timely manner.
  • Co-lead the presentation of the audited financial statements with the auditors to the Audit and Risk committee of the Board.  

Position Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years of professional experience in accounting or financial management roles, including experience in complex nonprofit environments with multiple program sites.  Supervision experience is also required. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field. 
  • Experience with grants management including compliance and reporting.
  • Strong computer skills, must be proficient with Excel/Google Sheets and accounting systems.  Working knowledge of Intacct and Nexonia is a plus.

Compensation

Compensation at Repair the World is determined based on salary band for the role and location. Starting salary for this New York-based role is between $90,000 – $100,000 if you have 5-7 years of related experience and are in NY.

Benefits package includes: paid time off for service in addition to vacation and holidays; employer pays 100% for employee medical/dental/vision coverage and 50% for dependents; retirement matching, and professional development funds. In addition, employees that have been with Repair for at least six months are eligible for 16 weeks of paid parental leave.

  • Applicants moved forward will have a first round screening with one of Repair’s Finance consultants.
  • Applicants that move forward from a first round interview will have a second-round interview with our Senior Director of Finance, Accountant and Senior Director of Human Resources.
  • The final round interview will be with Repair’s President and CEO and another member of Repair’s Executive Team.
  • All finalists will need to provide 2 professional references.
