Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world. We believe that service in support of social change is vital to a flourishing Jewish community and an inspired Jewish life. By 2030, Repair will inspire and catalyze one million acts of service towards repairing the world.

In 2015, Repair the World NYC was launched and opened a storefront community space, called “The Workshop”on Nostrand Ave in Crown Heights. The Workshop serves as a hub for our work in Central Brooklyn, operating primarily a workspace for our Fellows by day and a vibrant event space for all Brooklynites during evenings and weekends. The Workshop has shifted to be a mutual aid storage center in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Position Overview

Repair the World NYC  is looking for a dynamic Community Mobilizer to deepen relationships across lines of difference in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The Community Mobilizer will engage youth and adult community members toward increasing understanding and partnership between the Chabad Jewish and Afro-Carribean, primarily non-Jewish Black communities in Crown Heights through meaningful connections by way of service learning programs, education events, and social programming in areas of joint interest. This pilot program will eventually aim to recruit a cohort of Chabah and Black community members to serve, learn and host external events for community members. 

This position would report to NYC Repair’s Executive Director, and work collaboratively and closely with Repair’s greater NYC staff team and local partners. It is a part time role up to 25 hours a week. This is a pilot program that requires a two year commitment and  begins in the Fall of 2020. 

Position Responsibilities 

Outreach and Relationship Building & Strengthening

  • Building relationships with people and inspiring them to discuss, learn and serve.
    • Stewarding relationships with community leaders, community members and allies to inspire dialogue and bolster support of program
    • Listening and serving with volunteers at community events and organizations
    • Conducting outreach to community members to increase volunteer engagement at service partners and community organizations

Education and Facilitation

  • Design and lead meetings, educational programming and service learning projects for community members to promote discussion and understanding. 
    • Use different modalities of presentation and facilitation to reach volunteers and community members, including virtual and online aspects
    • Plan service learning projects with partners that support community building
    • Create original curriculum and plans for educational programming 

Project Manager

  • Lead a group in their learning and event planning
    • Ensure progress towards goals and objectives 
    • Support in consensus building and logistical planning

Position Requirements and Skills

  • Previous experience working with Chabad Jewish community in Crown Heights
  • Existing relationships and/or leadership role with the Crown Heights Chabad community
  • Proven success in planning and implementing educational curriculums and service-learning for groups that engage learning and dialogue
  • Ability to  build relationship and inspire people with diverse backgrounds and experiences 
  • Ability to manage relationships and communicate with organizational leaders in order to build a base to support a cause
  • Sophisticated awareness of poverty, structural racism, power and privilege and ability to discuss these issues with diverse groups in ways that empower and open people to learning
  • Self- starter with the ability to work in a fast paced environment with limited supervision 
  • Reliable transportation (public transit/bike is fine!) and ability and willingness to travel to partner sites throughout  Crown Heights, and possibly throughout NYC during the fall and spring.
  • Deep knowledge and familiarity with Brooklyn communities; preference for individuals residing in Brooklyn

Compensation

This is a part-time position that begins in the Fall 2020. Up to 25 hours per week at the hourly rate of $20.00
