January is Healthy Living Month here at Repair the World. Stop by all month long for interviews with our favorite health-focused organizations, inspiring stories, and tips to change your life while changing the world.
Are you a huge bike fan? The kind of person who walks around with a semi-permanent case of helmet hair and feels most comfortable experiencing the world on two-wheels? If so, let us introduce Hazon – a Jewish environmental organization that works to build a healthier and more sustainable Jewish community.
Hazon believes that Jewish tradition has lots of wisdom to share about how people interact with the planet and treat their bodies. They live out these values, and help others do the same, with a variety of great programs, but it all started with bike rides. Since 2001, more than 2,000 have joined Hazon on a bike ride in New York, California, Israel, or elsewhere. The riders raise money for important environmental causes, get invigorated through exercise, learn inspiring Jewish texts, and have a fantastic time along the way.
Whether you live in Tampa, Florida or Tel Aviv (or anywhere in between), are 13 or 73, love the forest, the beach, or the city skyline, Hazon has an inspiring ride with your name on it. (P.S. bike newbies, no need to be intimidated! The rides are fully supported and accessible to new cyclists as well as old pros.)
Check out Hazon’s upcoming rides in 2014:
Golden Gate Ride, May 23-26, 2014: Cycle along the edge of Tomales Bay and Point Reyes National Seashore, then pedal across the Golden Gate Bridge and into stunning San Francisco on this fully-supported ride. Along the way you’ll eat delicious local food, participate in educational work
New York Ride & Retreat, Aug 29-Sep 1, 2014: Spend a relaxing Shabbat learning, praying (or doing yoga, or going on a gorgeous walk) and petting the friendly goats at Hazon’s home at The Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Connecticut. Then cycle through the beautiful Hudson Valley into Manhattan on a beautiful two-day ride.
Arava Institute & Hazon Israel Ride, Nov 4-11, 2014: Spend 5 days riding through Israel’s countryside from Jerusalem to Eilat and meet students and alumni of the Arava Institute – an environmental studies program and research institute in the Arava Desert that promotes peace and sustainability in the region.
