Before packing vegetarian sack meals for The Night Ministry, we will reflect the teshuvah process by learning a few texts over dinner. Help us act on the value of kavod ha’bryiot, the preciousness of each human, as we support our local service partner in meeting the immediate needs of the unhoused community. Join Mishkan during Yom Kippur afternoon to write letters to voters in swing states.

Sukkot, with its imperative to dwell outside and make ourselves vulnerable to the elements, pushes us to consider our community members who face homelessness. Join us as we do some learning about housing insecurity in Chicago and Jewish perspectives on this challenge, and to pack kits of needed supplies to be distributed to neighbors who sleep outdoors by our partners at the Night Ministry.

Rooted in Sukkot’s themes of harvest, shelter, and shared responsibility, Harvesting Hope, led by JUF's Jewish Community Relations Council and the Chicago Sukkah Design Festival, will bring faith communities together to explore how urban agriculture can advance food security and bridge-building across Chicago. The program will spotlight organizations and houses of worship using gardens as tools for community care, beginning with a brief panel discussion and followed by a hands-on garden clean-up and tree planting at Stone Temple Baptist Church. Together, these elements will give attendees both a deeper understanding of the values behind the work and a tangible way to participate in local efforts that nourish bodies, strengthen relationships, and cultivate hope.
