Repair the World Announces Events and Programs Nationwide for Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service and Throughout Black History Month
January 10, 2024 – Repair the World, an organization leading a national movement to catalyze one million acts of service and learning toward repairing the world by 2026, today announced events and programs throughout MLK Weekend of Service (January 12th to 15th) and February’s Black History Month.
“Young Jews and their peers want to care for their most vulnerable neighbors and lean into the Jewish value of justice, tzedek,” said Shana Bloom (she/her), Chief Program Officer at Repair the World. “Particularly after the last few months, service experiences are a powerful way to build relationships across lines of difference for the common cause of supporting access for communities of color and other marginalized groups.”
Throughout January, Repair the World and local nonprofit partners have planned over 100 unique events in twelve major metropolitan areas nationwide including Atlanta, Baltimore, the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Pittsburgh. These events include preparing meals, clothing distributions, MLK Shabbat dinners, packing hygiene kits, and building an outdoor cooking station for asylum seekers, among others.

“Volunteering is one way we show up alongside our communities and address immediate needs created by institutionalized racism and other injustices,” added Bloom. “This MLK Weekend of Service, Repair the World continues to work toward a just world in which all individual needs are met, with care and consideration for the individual and their identity. This includes access to nourishing food, secure housing, appropriate medical care, and comprehensive education, along with the opportunity for everyone to realize their full potential. Throughout history, civil rights activists and service providers have taken action to work toward this reality.”

About Repair the World
Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world, igniting a lifelong commitment to service. In 2009, Repair the World began elevating meaningful service as a defining element of Jewish life by engaging Jewish young adults in service and learning to meet pressing local needs. Today, inspired by our values, we activate a national service movement, mobilizing partners and tens of thousands of Jewish young adults and their communities to serve alongside our neighbors.
