BJ hosts weekly Respite Dinners every Thursday to build community with, and connect resources to, asylum-seeking families living in NYC shelters. The program serves 60-70 local asylum families each month, and relies on both English- and Spanish-speaking volunteers to run smoothly. Volunteer tasks may include setting up the room, washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen, serving food, playing with children, conversing with guests, helping practice English, or distributing donations. This session takes place on Thursday, September 3rd at 6:00 PM.

September 11th calls us to remember, together. This kit-packing project honors the lives lost that day and the veterans who served our country, weaving Jewish learning into hands-on action. Yom Kippur's zikaron, sacred remembrance, and Rosh Hashanah's renewal guide our reflection on grief and gratitude. Volunteers will pack care kits for veterans at NYC's only homeless shelter dedicated to those who served, offering comfort and honor. Join us for an afternoon of service, learning, and community. Join us for the first in a new monthly series of service days at St. John's Bread & Life, a food pantry meeting food insecurity head-on in our community. This event is part of our National Days of Jewish Service, with a theme of remembrance and renewal — honoring the anniversary of 9/11 through hands-on action that turns memory into meaningful change. Together we'll pack and sort food, build connection with our neighbors, and create a joyful Jewish experience rooted in service and learning. No experience necessary, just a willingness to show up. This event marks the third anniversary of BJ's Immigrant Respite Dinner Program, which began when BJ invited asylum seekers living in local shelters to share a meal in the sukkah, inspired by Sukkot's call to welcome the stranger. That first meal grew into a weekly gathering that has brought together BJ members and newly arrived New Yorkers to share food, conversation, resources, recipes, and friendship. BJ's community and immigrant friends—no longer strangers—will come together again for a meal in the sukkah to celebrate where that first invitation has led. Join JCC Harlem's Longest Table, a large-scale community potluck bringing Harlem neighbors together for a shared meal, real conversation, and community joy. Last year, over 600 neighbors gathered at the table together! Bringing neighbors together across backgrounds is how we bridge divides and build a stronger community — pull up a chair and join us at the table!
