Repair the World Pittsburgh was founded in 2013 to mobilize Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world. We work to build relationships, show up with long-time friends and neighbors, and address local needs including food justice, education justice, and more through service based in Jewish values.

Free after school STEAM programming for kids in Garfield. Get to know the kids, help them with their projects, and even teach a lesson if you’d like! Volunteer Needs: Thursday or Friday After School Assistant (3:45 to 6:15pm); Saturday Crafternoon Assistant (Saturdays from 12:45 to 3:15pm); Special events as needed.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

Libraries are more than just spaces to study and check out books. Get involved with child development programs, language classes, career workshops and more! Volunteer Needs: Reading Buddies (availability at many libraries, afternoons on Mondays-Saturdays, minimum commitment of 4 hours/month), other opportunities available on a first-come-first-serve basis!

Circles East Liberty

Circles is a nationally-known, proven, and innovative way of connecting people across socioeconomic lines in an effort to move people and families out of poverty. Volunteer Needs: Childcare volunteers needed. Volunteers must commit to consistently coming to at least one Tuesday per month. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to suggest and run some programing with the kids. Meal prep needed. A group of volunteers must commit to cooking a healthy, ready to serve meal for sixty people on Tuesday evening.

Higher Achievement

At Higher Achievement, students receive homework coaching, an elective, dinner, and two hours of intensive small-group academic mentoring in math, literature, and seminars. Volunteer Needs: Mentors for middle school scholars are needed on Tuesdays (English/Language Arts) and Thursdays (Math) between 5:45-7:00

412 Food Rescue

412 Food Rescue was founded as a direct response to the disconnect between food waste, hunger and environmental sustainability. Food rescues are made by volunteers. Food is picked up from restaurants and stores that have excess, and is delivered to organizations in need. Volunteer Needs: Sign up for regular and ad hoc rescues. Could also use support in finding community members who are willing to advocate for the organization and encourage others to get involved. Download the App!

Grow Pittsburgh

Grow’s mission is to teach people how to grow food and promote the benefits gardens bring to our neighborhoods. Volunteer Needs: Volunteers for their classroom cooking classes (Once a week commitment for 3 months March-May; during the day). Volunteers for community garden work (Braddock and Shiloh Farms) in the spring. Getting involved with the Seed Swap event in March. Getting new members and volunteers for the Garden Resource Center when it reopens in March.

Just Harvest

Just Harvest reduces hunger in local communities by empowering people in need to obtain the public benefits that are their right, and by educating people about holding those in public policy accountable for eliminating poverty and hunger. Volunteer Needs: Volunteers for the Tax-a-thon and weekly tax sites. Groups can canvass for programs such as the Fresh Corners & Fresh Access programs. In the spring, volunteers can work weekly farmers market stands for the Fresh Access program.

Braddock Free Store

Needs volunteers to help sort donations, organize clothing racks, and distribute food. Open to volunteers Tuesday 11-1, Thursday 11-1, and Saturday 9-12. The Free Store is mostly outdoors, so dress warm!

Volunteer with Repair and the Black Urban Gardeners and Farmers of Pittsburgh Co-op (BUGs) to maintain their Monticello St. garden and hoop house. 7043 Monticello St, Wednesdays 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm.
