Back to School Service!

by | September 7, 2011 | 0 comments

While you join the hundreds of thousands of kids around the country who are heading Back to School, why not stand out — and head back to service?

Sure, the new school year is a great time to test a new hairstyle, new kicks, try out for the school play or a sports team. And maybe you’ll finally get that date with the boy or girl you’ve been crushing on. But the new school year is also a great time to give back to your community and the planet by picking an afterschool volunteer project to stick with throughout the school year.

Just a few hours a week can make a tremendous difference to people, animals and the environment – all of which really need it! AND, you’re guaranteed to meet new and interesting people, feel great, and learn something that doesn’t come from a textbook. Not to mention that you can also get some awesome experience that impresses universities and potential employers.

Interested? Great. Here’s how you can get started!

Help Communities Recover from Irene

by | August 31, 2011 | 0 comments

Over the weekend, Hurricane Irene made its way up the East Coast of the United States, leaving a wake of destruction in its path. As of the latest report, 43 people were killed, thousands were displaced — many losing their homes and businesses — and 2.85 million are still without power. The sum toll of incurred damage is not yet known as flooding continues in several affected areas.

Repair the World has reached out to communities along the East Coast and in the Caribbean to determine areas of need. Volunteers and contributions will be desperately needed as affected communities work to rebuild following the hurricane’s wreckage. Please consider lending your support.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who were affected by the hurricane and we will continue to monitor the situation. Follow Repair on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date with the latest information.

Volunteering + Values: A Repair the World Report on Jewish Young Adults

by | June 22, 2011 | 10 comments

Repair the World is pleased to present the first-ever comprehensive study of contemporary Jewish young adults and their attitudes and behaviors towards community service. Entitled “Volunteering +Values: A Repair the World Report of Jewish Young Adults,” the study was commissioned by Repair the World and conducted as a collaborative effort between the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University and Gerstein-Agne Strategic Communications. Prior to this study, little was known about the full extent of Jewish young adults’ service commitments as national surveys of volunteering either did not include information about the religious identity of respondents or contained too small a sample of Jewish young adults to permit meaningful analysis.

Help Japan Now!

by | March 11, 2011 | 1 comment

This morning, the island nation of Japan was hit by a series of severe earthquakes — including its largest in over 100 years (8.9 magnitude) — which was subsequently followed by a devastating tsunami that has wreaked untold havoc upon Japan’s coastal cities. While the full scale of the destruction is still uknown, over a thousand people have already been pronounced dead, hundreds more are missing, and thousands are now left without homes, schools and jobs. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragedy and their loved ones.

While, with any disaster, it is far too early to assess what opportunities may exist for both skilled and unskilled volunteers to assist in recovery efforts, one can take immediate action by giving charitably to organizations that are providing assistance to agencies on the ground in Japan.

Short-term volunteering can have long-term, positive effects on communities

Repair the World Announces Results of a Study Examining the Effects of Alternative Breaks and Other Short-Term Volunteer Projects on Communities in Need in the U.S. and Abroad

Repair the World is pleased to announce the results of its commissioned study “The Worth of What They Do,” by Ellen Irie, Principal at BTW informing change, to examine the effects of short-term service projects on the communities they serve. Much research has been done on positive impacts for volunteers, such as a sense of accomplishment and first-hand experience of global problems such as poverty and food insecurity. However, relatively little research has been done on the long-term effects of such projects on the communities they serve beyond concrete, short-term gains—for example, a new irrigation ditch or a freshly painted community center.

Listen to a podcast of the December 13 conference call discussing the report’s findings below:

Exclusive: Shalom Sesame’s “Tikkun Olam Song”

by | November 2, 2010 | 2 comments

Ask a Jewish child of the ’80s for their favorite examples of Jewish popular culture from that era and you’re certain to encounter fond memories of Muppets with a penchant for Hebrew, Jewish holidays and gloriously bad puns. Often they’ll give you just two words: “Moishe Oofnik!”

Your likely trigenarian would of course be referring to Oscar the Grouch’s Israeli cousin and the best-selling Jewish video series of all time, Shalom Sesame. Shot in 1986 and again in 1990, the Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) production combined segments from the classic Sesame Street with those of its Hebrew-language counterpart, Rechov Sumsum, mingling elements of Jewish and secular culture for American Jewish audiences.
